How to track Instagram Stories

Instagram Story tracking with Stream

Updated over a week ago

Instagram Stories are considered private content, which means Upfluence can only track them if influencers actively share their data. There are two ways to do this: automatic tracking (recommended) or manual uploads.

Option 1: Automatic Stories tracking (Recommended)

This is the most reliable and time-saving way to track Instagram Stories, especially at scale.

What you’ll need:

  • The influencer must have a professional Instagram account (either Creator or Business)

  • They must connect their Instagram account to Upfluence

  • They must use the correct keywords or mentions in the Story caption

  • You’ll need to set up the Stream or Campaign Content tab in advance

Steps:

  1. Invite influencers to connect their Instagram account

  2. Share your keywords and mentions
Let influencers know which hashtags or mentions they need to include in their Stories. For example:

    • #Running (tracked as a hashtag)

    • @mybrand (tracked as a mention)

  3. Set up your Stream or Campaign

    1. Go to the Content tab

    2. Choose "Story" as a post type

    3. Add your hashtags and mentions using the right field types:

      • Select “Hashtag” and enter the keyword (e.g., Running)

      • Select “Mention” and enter the handle (e.g., mybrand)

Note: Keywords must be exactly as shared, any typo or missing symbol will prevent tracking.

‼️ Important: Connection duration

An Instagram connection via Creator Space lasts 90 days. After that, the influencer needs to reconnect their account to keep Stories tracking.

Option 2: Manual Stories tracking

If an influencer didn’t connect their account before posting, no worries, they can still manually upload their Stories and performance metrics after the fact.

Steps:

  1. Ask influencers to upload their Stories manually

  2. Remind them to include keywords or mentions
Just like with automatic tracking, keywords need to be in the Story caption. Be sure to provide them with the correct ones (e.g., #Running, @mybrand).

  3. Set up your Stream or Campaign Content tab
Add your expected keywords and mentions before importing begins. The system won’t be able to import Stories that don’t include one of your predefined keywords.
