How to track clicks generated by influencers

A guide to generating and monitoring click tracking links in Upfluence.

Updated this week

In the campaign app, you can generate click-tracking links for each influencer in your campaign. These links allow you to track the number of clicks generated by influencer posts, helping you measure campaign performance.

1. Click tracking links vs. affiliate links

  • Click Tracking Links: Used to count the number of visitors/clicks generated by an influencer.

  • Affiliate Links: Linked to a discount offer and used to track the number of sales generated by an influencer.

2. Generating a click-tracking link

Option 1: From your Campaign table view

  • Add multiple influencers:

    1. Select the influencers you want to add your tracking link to.

    2. Click on the link icon ().

    3. Pick "Add tracking links".

    4. Input the URL to track (make sure to include https://).

    5. Click on "Create links".

    6. Check the influencers' profiles to ensure the link has been generated properly.

  • Add specific links for each creator:

    1. Open the influencer’s side panel profile, go to the Campaign tab, and find the Tracking session.

    2. Input the URL you want to track (make sure to include https://).

    3. Click on "Add tracking link".

    4. Enable UTM parameters setup if needed (optional).

Option 2: From your Campaign settings

When creating your campaign, you can include Tracking links in the first step of the campaign creation.

If you didn't set it during creation, you can still do it in Campaign Settings after the Campaign is created.

  1. Go to your Campaign "Settings"

  2. Enable Tracking Links

  3. Add your links

  4. Click on "Update Campaign" to save it.

When adding a tracking link after campaign creation, the tracking will only generate for new profiles added to your campaign. It's not retroactive.

3. Where to find and check a creator's click-tracking link

Option 1: In the publication instructions:

  1. The tracking link is automatically embedded in the influencer’s Publication email.

  2. The email includes this script:

    <% contribution.links.each do |link| %>
    <%= link.tracking_url %>
    <% end %>
  3. The system generates a final tracking link per influencer, which they will see in their campaign brief.

Option 2: In the creators' side panel:

  1. Open the Campaign Dashboard and click on an influencer’s profile.

  2. Navigate to the Tracking section.

  3. Click the copy button to get their unique tracking link.

4. Checking total clicks performance

Option 1: Performance tab

  • Check the Performance tab in your campaign to see the total number of clicks per influencer.

Option 2: Clicks report download

  • You can download a Clicks Report to analyze influencer-driven traffic.

  • Clicks can only be tracked on blogs if the influencer did not add the rel="nofollow" attribute on HTML link tags.

Frequently asked questions

1. What is the difference between Shopify affiliate links and Shopify discount codes?

Shopify affiliate links and discount codes function the same way in Upfluence.

  • Affiliate links: URLs that automatically apply a discount at checkout when clicked.

  • Discount codes: Customers manually enter the code at checkout.

Both methods ensure accurate sales tracking as long as a valid Upfluence-generated code is used during checkout.

2. What is the difference between affiliate links and click tracking links?

  • Affiliate links: Track sales generated by an influencer. These links can be linked to discount codes.

  • Tracking links: Measure the number of clicks an influencer generates. Useful for tracking website traffic.

📌 Upfluence AST (Agnostic Sales Tracking) affiliate links do not require a discount code, offering more flexibility.

3. Why isn’t the click-tracking link generated on influencer profiles?

The tracking link is only applied to influencers added after the tracking link was set up in your Campaign settings. Influencers added before this will not have the link automatically generated.

4. How are clicks tracked in a Campaign?

Clicks in a campaign can be tracked in two ways:

  • Upfluence’s link shortener: Similar to Bitly, this service shortens links and provides direct tracking.

  • UTMs (Urchin Tracking Modules): These can be added to links, allowing you to track clicks in Google Analytics.

5. Is there a way to re-add the coding for click-tracking links to the publication instructions once they've been deleted?

Yes, there is a "Reset to default" option right next to the "Save" button that will allow you to re-add the coding for discount codes/affiliate links to the publication instructions.
