How to manage 1099 forms and W-8 W-9 with Upfluence Pay

Everything you and your influencers need to know about tax reporting via Upfluence Pay

Updated over a week ago

1. Managing 1099 forms

Upfluence Pay partners with Stripe to handle 1099 form reporting for influencer payments. If you're working with creators based in the U.S., their 1099 forms are automatically generated and accessible via Stripe Express by January 31st each year.

These forms summarize their total earnings and are required for filing U.S. taxes.

How does it work?

To receive payments via Upfluence Pay, influencers must first create a Stripe Express account. During setup, they’ll choose an account type:

  • Business account (requires a business tax ID or TIN)

  • Individual account (requires a personal SSN)

Stripe uses this business type to determine which tax ID is used for 1099 reporting.

Where do creators find their 1099 form?

Once generated, creators can find their 1099 form in the Tax Forms tab of their Stripe Express account. This will be available by January 31st of the following year.

2. Managing W-8 and W-9 forms

When setting up a payment request, you can require influencers to upload a W-9 (U.S.-based) or W-8 (non-U.S.) tax form.

FAQ:

1. Does Upfluence Pay calculate or display VAT separately in payments?

No. VAT is not separated by default in Upfluence Pay. Here's how it works:

  • Deposits to your Upfluence Pay account: No VAT is applied. This is just a transfer of your funds.

  • Payments to creators: VAT handling depends on:

    • The recipient’s country

    • Their business structure

If VAT is included in the agreed rate: The creator should account for it when generating their invoice.

If VAT is not included: Payments will not reflect any VAT breakdown. The total amount will be shown as a lump sum.

2. What if an influencer needs to update their tax info?

If a creator needs to change tax information (like their SSN or TIN) after a 1099 form is issued:

  • Ask them to contact Upfluence Support via live chat from their Upfluence creator account (Login: https://creators.upfluence.com)

  • They’ll need to provide the correct tax details.

  • Our team will follow up with them directly by email.
