Upfluence tracking plans support two purchase types for Shopify:
One-time purchases
Subscriptions.
By default, a tracking plan applies its discount code to one-time purchases only. If your store sells subscription products, you can configure the plan to cover subscription purchases as well and choose exactly how many recurring payments the discount applies to.
This article covers the subscription-specific settings. If you haven't set up a tracking plan yet, start with How to set up and track creator sales with a tracking plan.
Set the purchase type
When creating or editing a Shopify tracking plan, you'll find a Purchase type field in the Code parameters section. Use it to define which type of purchase your discount code covers:
Select one of the following:
One-time purchase: The discount applies to non-subscription purchases only. This is the default for all new and existing plans.
Subscription: The discount applies to subscription purchases only.
Both: The discount applies to both one-time and subscription purchases.
This setting is only available for Shopify integrations and won't appear for other providers.
Configure recurring payment behavior
If you select Subscription or Both, you'll also need to decide how the discount behaves across recurring charges. You'll find these options in the Limits section of the form, under Recurring payments for subscriptions:
Limit discount to the first payment: The discount applies to the subscriber's first charge only. This is selected by default.
Limit discount to multiple recurring payments: The discount applies to a set number of recurring charges. Enter the number of payments in the field that appears below this option.
Discount applies to all recurring payments: The discount applies to every charge for as long as the subscription is active.
Note: When limiting to multiple recurring payments, the minimum value is 2. This is a Shopify requirement.
You can change any of these settings at any time before saving.
Configure an existing tracking plan for subscriptions
Tracking plans default to One-time purchase. If you run subscription-based campaigns and want to start attributing subscription purchases to your creators, you'll need to edit each relevant plan manually.
To update an existing plan:
Go to Campaigns > Settings > Sales & activity tracking,
or open Community, select your creators, click % Affiliates >
Select an existing tracking plan, then select the plan you want to update.
Click the plan name to open it, then click Edit.
Update the Purchase type field and configure recurring payment behavior as needed.
Click Save. The change is pushed to Shopify and your discount codes are updated in Upfluence.
Note that Tracking provider and Code pattern can't be changed once a plan has been created.
FAQs
1. Does this work with WooCommerce, BigCommerce, or Magento?
No. Subscription discount settings are only available for Shopify integrations. The Purchase type field won't appear when using other providers.
2. What's the minimum number of recurring payments I can limit a discount to?
The minimum is 2. This is set by Shopify, it's not possible to enter 1, since that's already covered by the Limit discount to the first payment option.
3. Will changing the purchase type on an existing plan affect codes that are already generated?
Yes. When you save an edit to an existing plan, the change is pushed to Shopify and your discount codes are updated in Upfluence.
4. Do I need to create a new tracking plan for subscriptions, or can I update my existing one?
You can update an existing Shopify plan. There's no need to create a new one unless you want separate plans for one-time and subscription purchases.
